The great soulful singers, and she's up there with Billy Holiday and Edith Piaf, seem to be vehicles for expressing the deepest well of sorrow. While they do this, they are nevertheless unable to live without going down the deep hole of alcohol and drugs. The sorrow that wells up from them, also threatens to take them down. It is a sad, sad, story, and this documentary captures it with proper respect and awe.
Tony Bennett, who was an icon to Amy, and a nurturing mentor, said it best, "If you live long enough, you can learn how to live." Unfortunately, our most sensitive and vulnerable, never live long enough to find their way.
